Slowly recovering in numbers there are now good numbers of the New Zealand dotterel breeding successfully. However they are still under threat from predators as they are ground nesters. Cats are particularly difficult to keep away when the birds are nesting in populated areas. Mount Maunganui had most of it's chicks predated this year from reports I have read, and all by domestic cats.
