Forest or ngahere geckos are endemic and are doing relatively poorly across Aotearoa New Zealand, compared to the Wellington region, where they have survived mammalian threats and bounced back thanks to the amazing community pest control work. Their intricate skin resembles bark, allowing them to blend into their habitat of forest and shrubs—an incredible camouflage. I was lucky to have the opportunity to visit Reino Grundling, who has a number of different species of New Zealand geckos in captivity.
