Native Tui making the most of an abundance of Kowhai flowers this Spring. You can see this Tuis brush tipped tongue as he momentarily pauses from feeding on the yellow Harakeke pollen. The preferred diet of Tui is nectar and honeydew, and they will often shift to, or commute more than 10 km daily to good nectar sources such as Kowhai, Flax, Rata, Pohutukawa, Gums and Banksias. In breeding season, Tui supplement their nectar diet with Cicadas and Stick insects.
